Project:
The project site was located in the ravines of river Sabarmati, with steep slopes, very little flat land, loose sandy soil and a thriving ecology of dense vegetation and large trees. The architectural concept, in response to this powerful landscape, was to create a ‘perch’ sitting lightly atop the small flat land, overlooking the valleys.
Approach:
The program, consisting of living room, dining area, kitchen, 2 nos. bedrooms and service facilities, was divided into smaller components, with each component designed to touch the ground lightly.
Considering the natural setting of the project, all the built structures were located along the periphery of the available flat land with minimal cut-fill of the existing terrain. The organization also created a small landscaped forecourt.
The random rubble stone masonry structures housed the circulation spaces like verandahs as well as the service areas like kitchen and toilets. The living spaces are cantilevered steel decks with light-weight envelopes of M.S. framing and fibre cement boards, hanging over the surrounding valleys.
The result is the celebration of a stunning landscape, a builtform that co exists with its surrounding and a dwelling for comfortable human habitation.
