Project:
The project was essentially the extension of a ground floor bungalow on the first floor, for the next generation and its lifestyle. Thus the primary challenge here was to juxtapose the existing load-bearing structure and its rigid space distribution with the contemporary needs of large, informal and fluid spaces.
Approach:
Continuing only the essential load-bearing walls, extension of the floor plate beyond the ground floor, with additional columns along the periphery provided solutions for creating large spaces. Introduction of double height volumes and split levels ensured adequate natural light and ventilation.
The architectural expression highlights the existing base structure as a solid box, with extended spaces creating forms of thin concrete skin.
